Blockbuster Culture's Next Rise or Fall: The Impact of Recommender Systems on Sales Diversity

چکیده
T paper examines the effect of recommender systems on the diversity of sales. Two anecdotal views exist about such effects. Some believe recommenders help consumers discover new products and thus increase sales diversity. Others believe recommenders only reinforce the popularity of already-popular products. This paper seeks to reconcile these seemingly incompatible views. We explore the question in two ways. First, modeling recommender systems analytically allows us to explore their path-dependent effects. Second, turning to simulation, we increase the realism of our results by combining choice models with actual implementations of recommender systems. We arrive at three main results. First, some well-known recommenders can lead to a reduction in sales diversity. Because common recommenders (e.g., collaborative filters) recommend products based on sales and ratings, they cannot recommend products with limited historical data, even if they would be rated favorably. In turn, these recommenders can create a rich-get-richer effect for popular products and vice versa for unpopular ones. This bias toward popularity can prevent what may otherwise be better consumerproduct matches. That diversity can decrease is surprising to consumers who express that recommendations have helped them discover new products. In line with this, result two shows that it is possible for individuallevel diversity to increase but aggregate diversity to decrease. Recommenders can push each person to new products, but they often push users toward the same products. Third, we show how basic design choices affect the outcome, and thus managers can choose recommender designs that are more consistent with their sales goals and consumers’ preferences.

The effect of recommender systems on sales diversity
1 Introduction Recommender systems offer benefits to both consumers and firms. For consumers, recommender systems help individuals both become aware of new products as well as select desirable products among myriad choices (Pham & Healey, 2005). For firms, recommender systems have the potential to increase profits by converting browsers into buyers, cross-selling products, and increasing loyalt...
متن کاملImpact of Recommender Systems on Sales Volume and Diversity
We investigate the impact of several different recommender algorithms (e.g., Amazon.com's “Consumers who bought this item also bought”), commonly used in ecommerce and online services, on sales volume and diversity, using field experiment data on movie sales from a top retailer in North America. Sales volume refers to the number of products purchased or amount of money spent by individual consu...
متن کاملThe Differences between Recommender Technologies in their Impact on Sales Diversity
Recommender systems are frequently used as part of online shops to help consumers browse through large product offerings by recommending those products which are the most relevant for them. Although consumers’ interactions with recommender systems have been subject to substantial research, it is still unclear what the effect on aggregated sales diversity is, i.e. whether this leads to predomina...
متن کامل“People Who Liked This Study Also Liked”: An Empirical Investigation of the Impact of Recommender Systems on Sales Volume and Diversity
We investigate the impact of collaborative filtering recommender algorithms (e.g., Amazon.com’s “Customers who bought this item also bought”), commonly used in e-commerce, on sales volume and diversity. We use data from a randomized field experiment on movie sales run by a top retailer in North America. For sales volume, we show that different algorithms have differential impacts. Purchase-base...
متن کاملEvaluation of recommender systems: A multi-criteria decision making approach
The evaluation and selection of recommender systems is a difficult decision making process. This difficulty is partially due to the large diversity of published evaluation criteria in addition to lack of standardized methods of evaluation. As such, a systematic methodology is needed that explicitly considers multiple, possibly conflicting metrics and assists decision makers to evaluate and find...
